How do you keep houseplants alive as a beginner?
Light is the first thing to get right
Most houseplant trouble starts with light rather than water. Matching a plant to the light a spot actually receives, bright but indirect for many common plants, prevents a long slow decline that no amount of watering will fix. Observing a spot across a day shows what light it really has.
Water by checking, not by schedule
Overwatering is a more common killer than underwatering. Rather than watering on a fixed day, checking whether the top of the soil is dry before watering suits most common plants, because their needs change with season, light and temperature.
Start with forgiving plants
Beginning with a couple of hardy, tolerant plants builds confidence and skill before taking on fussier ones. Learning the basics of light and watering on resilient plants is far less discouraging than losing a demanding plant and concluding the whole thing is impossible.
