How do you set a table, for everyday and for guests?

The plain logic behind a place setting, simplified.
How do you set a table, for everyday and for guests?

The everyday setting is enough most days

A basic place setting is a plate with a fork on the left and a knife on the right, blade facing the plate, and a glass above the knife. This covers almost every ordinary meal, and treating it as the default keeps daily eating simple and pleasant.

Add only what the meal needs

A more formal setting adds pieces outward in the order they are used, so cutlery is taken from the outside in. The useful rule is to add only what the courses actually require rather than every piece available, since an overloaded table is harder to use, not more correct.

Comfort over strict rules

Table conventions exist to make a meal flow, not to catch anyone out. A clean, calm setting that lets people eat easily is the real aim, and small departures from formal order matter far less than guests feeling relaxed.
